The Legacy of Atlantic Beach

The Birth of Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach, often referred to as “The Black Pearl”, holds a unique and cherished place in American history. Established during the era of segregation, it became a rare haven for African Americans seeking leisure and community at a time when they were excluded from most public beaches. Nestled between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, this small coastal town emerged as a vibrant cultural and entertainment hub for Black families in the South.

A Thriving Cultural and Musical Destination

During its peak in the mid-20th century, Atlantic Beach was a beacon for African American culture, known for its lively atmosphere, music, and celebrations. It became a hotspot for world-class entertainment, hosting legendary artists from the realms of jazz, blues, and R&B. The sounds of soulful music filled the air, attracting visitors from all over the country who came to dance, relax, and escape the hardships of segregation.

The Role of Music

Music was the lifeblood of Atlantic Beach, transforming it into a cultural epicenter. From beachside jams to late-night jazz sessions, the town resonated with the rhythms of hope, resilience, and joy. This legacy is a cornerstone of the Sunsets & Soul Music Festival, which aims to honor and continue the rich musical traditions that were born here.

Preservation Through Celebration

Atlantic Beach, known as “The Black Pearl,” is one of the last historically Black-governed oceanfront communities. Once a thriving cultural hub during segregation, it was a beacon for African American music, community, and resilience. Today, organizations like STARD (Supporters for Tyson’s Ancestral Restriction of the Deeds) work to preserve its heritage against gentrification. The Sunsets & Soul Music Festival continues this mission, celebrating Atlantic Beach’s legacy of unity, culture, and soulful music while inspiring future generations.
